I thought about our crabapple tree today as I read John’s gospel reading above, which is part of our gospel reading for the first Sunday in May. After reading and thinking about this text for a while, I realized that the emphasis of Jesus’ teaching is not so much on “bearing fruit,” as the first line might lead us to believe, but on “abiding in love.” Just like my crabapple tree, it’s not the fruit we’re after, but simply the joy of the beauty of its blossoms.
